AUTOMATED EXPORT SERVICES (AES) FILING
This electronic submission, known as Electronic Export Information (EEI filing), is necessary when the value of the item classified under each individual Schedule B number exceeds $2,500, or a validated export license is required. The information on export transactions enables the Census Bureau to collect trade data on US exports and assure compliance with US export restrictions. The EEI filing is submitted to the Automated Export System (AESDirect), which is hosted on the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) platform.
Q. What is a schedule B number?
A. A Schedule B number is a ten-digit code used by the United States Census Bureau to classify exported commodities. The first six digits of the number represent the Harmonized System (HS). The Schedule B number is used to classify shipments into internationally recognized categories. The number also collects and compiles export statistics, such as the number of exports by country, quantity, and value in US dollars.

Harmonized System (HS) Codes—International Trade Administration. The United States classifies products for export using a 10-digit code known as a Schedule B number, the first six of which are the HS number. Every physical product, even paper clips and airplanes, has a Schedule B number. The US Census Bureau’s Foreign Trade Division administers Schedule B.
