An ISF is a document needed by the United States Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) that contains origin information needed for shipment arriving in the United States by ocean. The ISF must be transmitted at least 72 hours before the shipment’s departure for the United States.

If you do not properly file the ISF, you will face up to a US$5,000 punishment. Other penalties include delayed deliveries and additional inspections.

ISF filings are completed online using either the Automated Broker Interface (ABI) or the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). To correctly file your ISF, you must engage the services of a licensed United States customs broker or another third-party software vendor.

A. Who is responsible for the filing? The ISF Importer is needed to file an Importer Security Filing. The ISF Importer is the party responsible for bringing products into a US port by vessel. This is the responsibility of the importer in America.

A. An Importer Security Filing (ISF), commonly known as “10+2,” is a CBP-required filing that documents importing information and details as shipments travel from point to point. Importers who fail to correctly file the ISF prior to the shipment of their goods will face penalties (a $5,000 fine).
